Abstract
"Ocular hypertelorism" was a term employed by Grieg in his classic paper in 1924 to describe two congenital facial deformities with a great breadth between the eyes. The term has been confusing for variety of reasons. Orbital hypertelorism, therefore, the preferred term and simple defined as a abnormal wide distance between the orbits.
Interorbital distance is best measured radiographically by various methods. Hansman(1966) recorded percentile standards for the measurement of interorbital distance for both sexes from birth through age 25. Interorbital distance average 16 mm at birth and rises to 25 mm by age 12. At about 13 year, the female curve begin to level off, but male show a continued increase interorbital distance until approximately age 21. Average adult interorbital distance is 25 mm in the female and 28 mm in the male.
Many attempts have been made to correct only the extraorbital malformation (epic anthus, eyebrows and roof of the nose etc.) In late 1960, Tessier devoted to make the recent success of craniofacial & midfacial osteotomies of the face and calvarium.
We experienced one case of second degree orbital hypertelorism, who has increased interorbital distance. The interpupillary distance was 65 mm, medial intercanthal distance was 51 mini and interorbital distance by the Hansman¢¥s method was measured to 36 mm. The enlarged ethmoid sinus was chiseled partially with the high speed pneumatome, and both medial canthal tendons were wired in the drill holes through the medial orbital walls. The dorsum of the nose was also augmented by the transplantation of 8th. rip cartilage. Postoperatively, the medial intercanthal distance was 32 mm, the i:nterpupillary distance was 62mm and the interorbital distance was measured to 27mm.
We report a true hypertelorism in this paper and brief review of it.
